Project

JEEP CENTRAL CONSOL DESIGN

Design challenge

Using SolidWorks,  create a highly accurate 3D model, capturing every intricate detail of the Grand Cherokee 2022 console’s design, including all buttons, controls, compartments, and storage spaces. The model was not meant to be so precise but for visualization purposes, and defect concentration diagrams for production.

Role

CAD Designer

STARTING FROM SCRATCH

In this project, I was initially provided with some photos of the actual central console design. But no blueprint of any of the parts of the assembly. However, we quickly realized that these pictures were insufficient to create a truly realistic 3D model. To overcome this challenge, I embarked on an investigative process to gather more information and obtain additional photos.

RESEARCH AND PLANNING

By conducting thorough research and sourcing various reference materials, I ensured that we I had enough photos to accurately complete the design. I gathered as much photos as possible. This comprehensive approach allowed me to produce a highly detailed 3D model that closely resembled the central console of the Grand Cherokee 2022.

OBTAINING MEASUREMENTS

Since the photos did not provide precise measurements, I took measurements from a similar SUV to get an accurate representation of the car’s dimensions. Such as length, steering wheel dimensions, etc. These measurements were crucial for creating a realistic 3D model.

DESIGN

As CAD modeler I began the design process in SolidWorks by creating advanced sketches. These sketches helped establish the basic shape and contours of the central console. Advanced sketching techniques allowed for more flexibility and control over the curves and lines, enabling  me to achieve the desired organic shape.

Lofting and sweeping features in SolidWorks as well as advanced surface modules were employed to connect different sections of the console smoothly. This helped in creating transitions between various curves, resulting in a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design.

REALISTIC VISUALIZATION

To enhance realism, high-quality textures and materials were applied to the 3D model. This step contributed to a lifelike appearance, simulating the different materials used in the console, such as leather, soft plastic, wood and metal.

RESULTS AND ACHIVEMENTS

To showcase the final design in its best light, I produced realistic renders of the 3D model. Using advanced rendering techniques in SolidWorks, they generated high-quality images that depicted the central console from different angles and under various lighting conditions. These renders provided a photorealistic representation of the console’s appearance, materials, and design.

BLUEPRINTS

For visualization of defect concentrations purposes blueprints were generated in order to accurately represent  the design of the console.  Each view of the design was divided into different sectors and then the number of defects for each section is measured and added to a table. This is very useful in automotive industry for quality assurance and statistical purposes.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

This work can be used in the future to offer the automotive industry a better way to measure defect concentration in parts that have an organic form and is not easy for technicians and operators in plant to generate realistic and accurate drawings of the part and have a diagram that can work for them.
